It’s been a generous Eid holiday this year  apart from the crippling price hike and the sign-off on Tiran and Sanafir. Post-Eid, Cairo’s cultural operators have a strong line-up of events ready for the city's dwellers: from concerts and a poetry night to a local artisans' bazaar in Nasr City, this week is packed with things to do.

I Have a Sensitive Digestion exhibition - Sunday

The week starts with an exhibition opening at downtown Cairo’s Mashrabia Gallery. Swiss artists Alessandra Respini, Lorenz Rieser and Jan Bachmann present a body of work collectively created on Mashrabia’s ceiling, which viewers will explore through small mirrors provided as they enter. We’re intrigued.

7 pm, July 2, Mashrabia Gallery, 8 Champollion Street, downtown Cairo. Free. More information here.

Poetry Night with Jehan Bseiso - Tuesday

Mada contributor Jehan Bseiso is featured in a poetry night at the Netherlands-Flemish Institute in Cairo (NVIC). The award-winning Palestinian poet, researcher and aid worker will read work from her current collection of poems Conversations Continued, a compilation of “real, misheard and misremembered conversations.”

7 pm, July 4, NVIC, 1 Mahmoud Azmi Street, Zamalek, Cairo. Free. More information here.

What the City Means to Youth workshop - Tuesday

Megawra hosts a one day workshop facilitated by American University in Cairo assistant professor in architecture and urban planning Khaled Abd El-Halim which explores the physical, social and phsychological aspects of cities in relation to the articles adopted by UN member states at the third UN conference for Housing and Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat III). The talk is in Arabic.

6 pm, July 4, Megawra, Al-Sharif Street, behind Shagaret al-Dorr Mausoleum, Cairo (map here). Free. More info and readings required for workshop here.

Asia Madany concert - Friday

Prolific Cairo-based Sudanese songstress and her band grace cafe/music venue Room Art Space for a night of upbeat afro-Sudanese music.

July 7, Room Art Space, 10 Etihad al-Mohameyeen al-Arab Street, Garden City, Cairo. LE50. More info and reservations here.

Sorour + Hawas concert - Saturday

To close the weekend is Cairo Jazz Club's double bill of new-ish alternative bands doing experimental fusion. Sorour (spearheaded by Mohamed Sourour) fuses traditional Arabic music with rock and jazz, while Hawas have invaded the scene lately with their mix of alt-rock and blues with Arabic lyrics.

10.30 pm, July 8, Cairo Jazz Club, 197 26 July Corridor, Agouza, Giza. Free, but reservations necessary: 010 6880 4764 (3-9 pm daily). More info here.
