This picture is more about my presence as the photographer and includes the audience, who are outside the frame like me. The boy is acting and making fun with me in front of the camera, and the men with the shisha are watching us, so there are four different angles of observation within this picture, and the boy’s interaction with me opens up a new space. It takes down the so called “fourth wall” that separates the audience from the action of a theatrical performance, traditionally conceived of as an imaginary wall completing the enclosure of the stage and the city — for me the streets of Cairo.
