The cattle egret’s natural habitat expanded as cattle ranching moved from Europe into northern Africa, and, in the nineteenth century, into sub-Saharan Africa. The cattle egret feeds on a wide range of prey, including insects, especially grasshoppers, crickets, flies, and moths, as well as spiders, frogs and earthworms.
