Small birds fly by flapping their wings, but big birds lock their wings in place and soar long distances. Soaring birds fly only during the day, using hot thermal drafts to gain altitude and then glide downwards. Using this technique, they can travel over long distances with little exertion. In the photograph above, you can see a lesser spotted eagle and five steppe buzzards, all of which are soaring birds.
