Sand for soap in Gaza’s displacement camps
Cleaning agents, such as hand and body soap, dishwashing and laundry detergents, and shampoo, are currently rare and expensive commodities in the markets of displacement encampments and destroyed urban areas of southern Gaza, due to Israel's closure of the strip's border crossings and siege of aid and commercial goods.
Israel's strangulation of Gaza's imported goods economy places items such as personal hygiene and cleaning products beyond the reach of displaced Palestinians who can't afford to purchase the bread and water necessary for their very survival. And thus displaced women in western Khan Younis have begun using the plentiful sand that floors their sea-side tents as an alternative to soap and shampoo to bathe their children and wash their dishes.
