Ramadan in Gaza: Hope endures despite all

Abdallah Alsayed، Zuheir Dola 2 دقيقة قراءة

The holy month of Ramadan inspires mercy and solidarity. It is a time for worship and warm family gatherings. However, in Gaza this year, Ramadan comes amid the misery of bombardment, displacement and starvation.

Yet despite the ongoing horrors of genocide, Palestinians in Gaza are living on hope, rising above the bitterness of their conditions even with pain in their hearts. They prepare simple meals with which to break their fasts day after day, with families spreading their ritual repasts on tent floors or atop the ruins of homes, feasting on what nourishment they have managed to provide.

After breaking their fast at sunset, displaced Gazans spend their Ramadan evenings gathered inside tents or on the rubble of their homes. They visit cafés and buy seasonal sweets on the street, determined to live and savor life despite the widespread devastation caused by war.

Displaced children light their Ramadan lanterns atop destroyed homes, which are nonetheless decorated to host family gatherings, embodying hope in defiance of Israel’s wide-sweeping destruction, spanning from the Gaza Strip’s farthest north to the enclave’s border with Egypt in the south.
