Rafah’s sole functioning hospital
Amid Israel’s ongoing military operation in Rafah, the Abu Youssef al-Najjar Hospital, a rather small clinic in the southernmost Gazan city, has been forced to shut down. The hospital falls within red zones that the Israeli military forcibly evacuated, currently under constant aerial bombardment and facing an expanding ground invasion.
In mid-May, the Shifa Field Hospital was set up on Rafah governorate’s northwestern border with Khan Younis, around five kilometers from Rafah city. The hospital, made up of cloth tents, only accepts non-critical cases transferred from the Kuwait Specialty Hospital in Rafah.
Since the Red Crescent’s Emirati Hospital has also stopped accepting child-bearing patients, the Kuwait Specialty in the Shaboura area is now the only remaining functional hospital in Rafah. Despite being smaller and less equipped than the shut-down Abu Youssef Al-Najjar Hospital, it is left to single handedly treat the victims of Israel’s escalating military assault. Its limited infrastructure includes cloth tents at its entrance that vary in capacity in terms of equipment and readiness to handle incoming cases. The hospital further suffers from a shortage in staff and essential medical supplies.
