Malek Yassin: Rescued from his killed mother’s womb
Palestinian infant Malek Yassin, born on July 19, survived Israeli forces bombing his displaced family’s place of shelter in central Gaza’s Nuseirat refugee camp on the same day as his birth. He was still in the womb of his mother, Ola al-Kurd, who was nine months pregnant when she died of injuries suffered in the bombing. Doctors delivered him in an emergency post-mortem Caesarean section birth. Malek survived, but was born without a mother. His father was critically injured in the bombing, and Malek is currently being cared for in the home of his paternal aunt.
Some 17,000 children in the Gaza Strip have lost one or both of their parents in the ongoing Israeli military operations across the strip, according to UNICEF estimates from February.
