The United States Senate Committee — which oversees Foreign Aid — presented a bill for a new law on Wednesday, mandating the reduction of US aid to Egypt.

The new law suggests reducing military aid from US$1.3 billion to $1 billion, reported privately owned Al-Masry Al-Youm newspaper. Economic aid will also be reduced from $200 million to $150 million.

Following a committee meeting on Wednesday, South Carolinan Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said that Egypt needs to take steps towards democracy, adding that the United States wants to help Egypt, but that it needs to help itself first. The senator said it is time for the Senate to reconsider aid to Egypt.

In April, Graham had expressed reluctance towards backing the resumption of US aid after a period of withdrawal, but approved delivering 10 Apache attack helicopters to the Egyptian military to help maintain stability in Sinai. The republican senator added that investing US dollars in Egypt would be risky at this time.

The US government suspended military aid to Egypt last October in response to the ouster of former President Mohamed Morsi.
