The Armed Forces said it killed three extremists and arrested 17 others between March 15–16, in a statement posted on the military spokesperson’s Facebook page Monday.

In a security operation in North Sinai, the Armed Forces, in cooperation with the police, said it raided a number of “terrorist and criminal hubs” in Arish, Sheikh Zuwayed and Rafah, among other areas.

Nine tunnels were also destroyed in the operation, while 60 huts allegedly belonging to “terrorist and takfiri elements as a base for attacks on the army and police” were burnt down and destroyed.

Egypt's military has launched a sustained crackdown on armed groups in the Sinai Peninsula since attacks on security forces increased following the removal of former President Mohamed Morsi from power in July 2013.

A toll calculated by state-owned daily newspaper Al-Ahram last December showed that 164 people had been killed and 592 arrested since July 2013. Tens of others were killed since December.
