Tawakkol Karman denied entry into Egypt
Nobel laureate Tawakkol Karman was denied entry into Egypt Sunday by authorities at Cairo International Airport as she arrived from Yemen, Al-Ahram reported.
As she was finalizing the arrival procedures, the Yemeni journalist was prevented from entering after her name was found on a list of people banned from entry at the request of “a political authority.”
On her Facebook page, Karman said she was detained for an hour at the airport before being forced to leave “with no reasons provided.”
Karman’s friend, Bushra Hassan al-Turabi, who accompanied her from Sanaa to Cairo, requested returning with her on the same flight.
Karman, 34, opposed the ouster of former President Mohamed Morsi by the army on July 3 and expressed support for protesters calling for his return. She even announced that she would join the sit-in at Rabaa al-Adaweya where Morsi’s supporters have been camped for over a month.
Karman is a human rights activist who heads the group "Women Journalists Without Chains," which she co-founded in 2005. She is a co-recipient of the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize, becoming the first Arab woman and youngest winner of the Nobel Prize to date.
