Samanoud workers released, await ministerial decision

Workers who were arrested in the dispersal of the Samanoud sit-in were all released without charges, according to labor activist Siham Shoueida.

Shoueida said that 25 workers were arrested and released, and at least 12 others were released from the hospital after they sustained injuries from the dispersal on Saturday.

Al-Ahram reported that a lieutenant and seven police officers were injured after clashes with workers of the Samanoud textile company in Gharbiya when they moved to disperse their sit-in.

The workers had blocked the Tanta-Mahallah-Mansoura railway for several hours, demanding that their late salaries be paid.

Al-Ahram reported that security forces used tear gas to disperse the sit-in while workers responded by throwing rocks at security forces. However, Shoueida insists that there were infiltrators among them who instigated the clashes.

Shoueida said the workers are currently awaiting a decision from the Manpower and Finance Ministries regarding their salaries.
