Between 2014 and 2018, Egypt maintained its ranking as the third largest importer of arms globally, after Saudi Arabia and India, according to a report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute released two days ago. Egypt ranked third in last year’s report, which covered the period between 2013 and 2017.
According to the Sweden-based think tank, the United States ranked first in the global arms market with a sales share of 36 percent, while Russia came second with 21 percent followed by France at 6.8 percent, Germany at 6.4 percent, and China at 5.2 percent.
France continued to be Egypt’s largest supplier, while Russia came second, followed by the US.
The report reveals that Egypt is the biggest client of both France and the United Arab Emirates.
The report utilizes the size of arms deliveries, not monetary value. Because of the fluctuating volume of deliveries each year, the report uses data coverage over a period of five years.
