Reem Maged’s show suspended from ONtv

A television show hosted by outspoken presenter Reem Maged and aired on ONtv was suspended Friday, the state-owned Al-Ahram newspaper reported.

The weekly program was produced by Deutsche Welle and aired by its Arabic channel and ONtv. It will continue to air on Deutsche Welle.

Albert Shafik, head of ONtv, refused to comment on the suspension to Al-Ahram, amid speculations that the channel was pressured by authorities to cancel the show.

Maged’s show, “Gamea Mo’anath Salem” tackled social issues, particularly regarding the role of Egyptian women in society.

Last week, Maged hosted Iman Hilal, a photographer who spoke about her experiences documenting clashes, protests and other events that unfolded following the January 25 revolution.

Bloody images from the dispersal of the Rabea al-Adaweya sit-in in August 2013 were shown in the episode, as Hilal recounted stories of photographing violence.

An outspoken critic of the regime following the January 25 revolution, Maged has had several run-ins with the authorities. In 2011, she was summoned by military prosecution, along with activist Hossam al-Hamalawy, after the latter appeared on her show “Baladna Bel Masry,” accusing the military of torturing activists.

The following year, Maged was also accused of insulting the judiciary after criticizing judges on the same show.

During her time at “Baladna Bel Masry,” Maged was known for taking an independent and, at times, unpopular line. She held an interview that many credited with the resignation of Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq in 2011.

Maged didn’t broadcast anything following the ouster of Mohamed Morsi in July 2013, after she refused to renew her contract with “Baladna Bel Masry,” citing a disparity between her views and the channel’s policies.

“Gamea Mo’anath Salem” marked her return to television this month, showing just two episodes before being taken off air. Maged could not be reached for comment.
