Police storm Al-Azhar University campus
Police stormed Al-Azhar University campus on Monday, amid fierce clashes with students supporting the Muslim Brotherhood.
The students protested against the death of two students on Sunday, however the official Middle East News Agency (MENA) reported that students allegedly besieged the university's administrative building and attempted to attack employees inside.
MENA also reported that the students attempted to vandalize the building, damaging cars parking in front of it, which led the university's administration to call on police forces to intervene.
In a statement by Al-Azhar University's student union, students mostly belonging to the ousted Islamist organization said that police attacked the girls' dormitory building with heavy volleys of tear gas.
The student union also reported protests inside different branches of the embattled university.
The female section of Al-Azhar University is demonstrating specifically against the detention of student Kareema al-Serafy, who was recently arrested from her home. The students claim that she was "kidnapped" because she was living alone, following the arrest of her father and brother without arrest warrants.
Serafy is the daughter of Amin al-Serafy, who was part of former President Mohamed Morsi's presidential team.
MENA meanwhile reported that Brotherhood students protested inside Mansoura University, raising Al-Qaeda flags. Mansoura students attempted to demonstrate outside the campus but were prevented by police, the agency said.
