Three police officers were shot and injured by unidentified assailants on Sunday, according to the state-run Middle East News Agency, in the latest of a series of attacks in North Sinai.

Eyewitnesses claim the gunmen were in the same car from which a priest was shot Saturday, as he walked in a neighborhood south of Arish.

The police officers were reportedly standing in front of a cafeteria in the same area in Arish, Masaeed, when a car without license plates pulled over and gunmen inside started shooting. The police officers were immediately transferred to a hospital where they are currently undergoing treatment.

Ongoing violence has been taking place in Sinai amid clashes spreading throughout the country between supporters of deposed President Mohamed Morsi and their opponents. Morsi was ousted from his post on Wednesday by a military declaration following mass street protests calling for his departure.

On Friday, unidentified assailants attacked five police and military checkpoints and killed a conscript in North Sinai. Later in the day, masked gunmen on motorbikes killed two policemen. On Saturday morning, three military checkpoints were attacked.
