On-campus protests continue across the country Sunday
Clashes continued Sunday between students and security forces in universities across the country, as students protested what they deem a military coup, as well as the detention and suspension of colleagues.
Security forces dispersed protests at Al-Azhar University Sunday, as demonstrators attempted to disrupt exams, the official Middle East News Agency (MENA) reported.
Students chanted against the Armed Forces and the intervention of security on campus. Students also called for the release of detained colleagues.
Muslim Brotherhood students also organized protests at Cairo University, the state-owned Al-Ahram newspaper reported. The students condemned the earlier suspension of students who had heckled former Mufti Ali Gomaa when he visited the campus in September.
Students also stormed a hall on campus where a ceremony was being held to honor the late and former dean of the school of political science, the newspaper reported.
Clashes were reported Sunday at universities in Minya, Helwan and Assiut. Tens of students were injured in the clashes in Minya and Assiut, where security forces allegedly used rubber pellets, according to the Students against the Coup Facebook page.
Students Against the Coup is a movement launched by students who support the return of deposed President Mohamed Morsi. Since his ouster, protests have been confronted by security forces and the level of violence has escalated on campuses across the country.
Since Morsi’s removal in July, four students have died in clashes between the police and demonstrators. Three of those who died were students at Al-Azhar University and one was enrolled at Cairo University.
Student activists had called for a boycott of exams, in protest against the student deaths and the arrest of dozens.
