New security plan for universities

Minister of Higher Education Hossam Eissa decided on Sunday to extend the mid-year break until a strategy against violence is put together for all universities.

Eissa said the Supreme Council of Universities is due to meet next week to discuss new security plans, according to state owned news portal EgyNews.

During a meeting at the State Information Service, Eissa added that extra security personnel, contracted through private companies, would be posted on university campuses as part of the new plan.

Eissa said he had personally intervened for the release of a number of detained students after he was contacted directly by their parents. However, he added the matter is now in the hands of the prosecution.

The minister suggested the Muslim Brotherhood is aiming to turn students against the revolution, creating chaos within universities and pitting students against him personally because “he is a son of the January 25 revolution.”

During an emergency meeting earlier this month, the Supreme Council of Universities granted university presidents the authority to suspend students involved in disruptive acts on campus.
