Morsi’s location unknown, says son

Son of ousted President Mohamed Morsi, Osama, raised suspicions that his father’s whereabouts are once again unknown and that he is no longer being held at Borg al-Arab Prison in Alexandria.

On his Facebook page Sunday, Osama said he was prevented from visiting his father in Borg al-Arab prison, despite having a judicial permit. “I was arbitrarily prevented [from entry] without any legal basis,” Osama wrote.

“This leads us to believe that the president’s whereabouts are unknown and that he is not in Borg al-Arab Prison,” he added.

Morsi was moved to the Alexandrian prison on November 4, after his trial was adjourned until January 8. A delegation of lawyers visited him in prison on November 12, including Mohamed Selim al-Awa and his son Osama.

Before his trial, Morsi was held incommunicado following his ouster by the Armed Forces on July 3. His ongoing detention has become the subject of controversy and triggered calls for the disclosure of his whereabouts from various international players.

Morsi faces charges of murder and attempted murder related to clashes in December 2012 that claimed 11 lives in front of Ettehadiya Presidential Palace. He is also implicated in prison breaks, in particular from Wadi al-Natrun Prison during the January 25 uprising in 2011. The former president also faces charges of spying for Hamas in order to conduct attacks on Egyptian police stations and of plotting the murder and kidnap of policemen.
