Interior Ministry announces execution of Alexandria man found guilty of killing teen

In a statement Saturday, the Interior Ministry announced the execution of Mahmoud Hassan Ramadan, convicted of throwing a teenager to his death off a rooftop in Alexandria’s Sidi Gaber neighborhood in July 2013.

Ramadan was executed after he was found guilty of throwing teenagers off a rooftop during protests by the Muslim Brotherhood, the ministry said.

The Alexandria Criminal Court had last May upheld the death sentence handed down to Ramadan in March. In addition to the 19-year-old victim, two other boys suffered critical injuries in the incident, which occurred amid violent demonstrations backing former President Mohamed Morsi in the aftermath of his ouster by military mandate on July 3.

The tragic incident had gone viral when a video documenting the three victims being thrown from the roof began circulating on social media.

This is the first death sentence to be carried out on a Muslim Brotherhood supporter.

Hundreds of alleged supporters, however, have been sentenced to death over the past year, in individual and mass sentences, the most recent of which was the upholding of a death sentence handed down to 183 defendants on charges stemming from deadly violence that broke out in the Giza town of Kerdasa in August 2013. Other death sentences are still pending final verdicts.

Several news reports claimed that the execution will be broadcast on state television. However, EgyNews refuted the claims, citing an official source at state TV, who said that it adheres to standards of professionalism in such cases.

The court sentenced 15 other defendants to 25 years in prison in the same case, the maximum sentence in Egyptian law, while 45 others received jail time ranging from 10 to 15 years, for their role in violence in the Sidi Gaber area.
