Ganzouri returns to the corridors of power

Interim president Adly Mansour has appointed Kamal al-Ganzouri presidential adviser, according to state news agency reports.

Octogenarian Ganzouri was prime minister under deposed President Hosni Mubarak from January 1996 to October 1999. He was again appointed prime minister in November 2011 by Field Marshall Hussein Tantawi when the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces ruled the country following the fall of Mubarak.

Ganzouri’s appointment in 2011 attracted criticism on the grounds that he was too old for the post and because of his close ties with the Mubarak regime.

Ganzouri’s tenure was equally contentious. In addition to general criticism for the failure of his government to make any substantial changes and he faced recrimination following the February 2012 Port Said massacre when 74 young men were killed during a football match. His government was also criticized following the decision to allow foreigners facing charges in connection to the NGO trial which began in March 2012 to leave the country.

The People’s Assembly tried unsuccessfully for months to have Ganzouri’s government dissolve through a vote of no-confidence.
