Dozens of AUC students hold campus demonstration supporting Palestinians
Students at the American University in Cairo held a march on Wednesday afternoon in solidarity with Palestine and Lebanon against Israel’s aggression at the university campus in New Cairo, one of the participants told Mada Masr.
A few dozen students could be seen crossing the campus courtyard carrying the Palestinian flag and chanting in footage obtained by Mada Masr.
The private university’s comparatively liberal campus is one of the only places protests supporting Palestine have been allowed to take place over the past year, with protest activities at other universities nationwide restricted to a single day of demonstrations called for by authorities and supporting both the Egyptian state and Palestinians on October 22.
Wednesday’s demonstration was called for by the group AUC Students Movement for Palestine and the Quds Student Club, before it was adopted by the university’s student union and other student clubs, the participant said.
Organizing students sought to demonstrate on October 7 — the anniversary of the Aqsa Flood Operation and the start of the Israeli war on Gaza — but the university administration banned activities on that day and more university security staff were present.
Instead, a few students raised banners in solidarity with Palestine and Lebanon on top of one of the university buildings on October 7, according to the source.
AUC students organized several protests during the past academic year, declaring their solidarity with Palestine and their opposition to the Occupation. They also demanded that the university administration terminate its contracts with computer giant Hewlett Packard (HP) and French insurance company AXA, two of the largest companies targeted by the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) campaign, due to their involvement in supporting the Israeli military and in the construction of Israeli settlements.
AXA reportedly divested funds it held in Israeli banks and Israeli weapons manufacturer Elbit, according to a BDS statement released in August.
