Court orders arrest of Minya governor

Court orders arrest of Minya governor

A Minya court ordered the arrest of the governor of Minya, General Salah Zeyada, on Wednesday in response to inaction on the implementation of a court verdict.

Ahmed al-Ghoul, the head of the Minya Misdemeanor Court, ordered that the governor be arrested, imprisoned for six months and removed from his post after he halted a court ruling stipulating that land in the north of Minya be split up, the privately owned daily Al-Masry Al-Youm reported.

The ruling will be suspended if Zeyada pays LE1,000 in bail.

The judge also ruled that lawyers in the case receive LE10,000 in damages, to be distributed amongst the affected persons in the case.

Courts have ordered the arrest and removal of officials from office before. In April 2013, Prime Minister Hesham Qandil was sentenced to one year in absentia for failing to implement a 2011 ruling ordering that a textile factory be re-nationalized.
