Azhar expels 76 students for role in ‘riots’
The president of Al-Azhar University expelled 76 students for their involvement in “riots” on campus over the last few months, MENA reported.
In a statement on Sunday, Osama al-Abd, head of the university, said the decision follows an investigation conducted by the university’s administration, which proved the students’ involvement in acts that violate university rules.
Thirty-six of those expelled are students at Al-Azhar University in Zagazig, he added.
The university’s administration said it would enforce legal measures against those proven to have participated in such acts, in order to maintain the safety of students, professors and staff, MENA reported.
Last March, two students were killed during clashes between police and Al-Azhar University students after security forces entered the campus to disperse protests.
University protests have been escalating since September. Campuses have been sites of intense clashes between security forces and demonstrating students following the July 3, 2013 ouster of former President Mohamed Morsi.
