Armed Forces spokesperson denies allegations of military defections

Rumors of soldiers defecting in protest of the ouster of former President Mohamed Morsi were denied by the spokesperson of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) on Sunday

Members of the Muslim Brotherhood have been posting videos allegedly showing military defectors who opposed the Armed Forces' move to oust Morsi last week.

"It is completely imagined," the spokesperson, Ahmed Mohamed Ali, said on his official Facebook page.

"This is part of a systematic psychological war directed at the Armed Forces in order to cause divisions in the military's ranks and threaten its strong cohesion," he added.

The spokesperson also said that such rumors are hoping to misguide the Egyptian people for "corrupt political aims."

He described those who spread these allegations as "ignorant of the nature of the Egyptian army and its cohesive dogma."

Muslim Brotherhood members have claimed that certain sectors of the military have declared defections.

One video that began circulating on the internet yesterday allegedly shows an Air Force captain declaring his support for Morsi, asking Defense Minister and SCAF head Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to reinstate the ousted president, and calling for a peaceful transition of power.

The alleged captain, dressed in military uniform, shows his military ID in front of the camera, but it is not clear enough to determine his identity or whether the ID is real or not.
