Activist Hassan Mostafa’s case postponed

Alexandria Criminal Court adjourned the case of political activist and human rights lawyer Hassan Mostafa to September 2 on Sunday, while ordering his release.

Mostafa, 30, is charged with assisting the breakout of detainees arrested for blocking the main railway station in Alexandria in January, to protest a train crash in Badrasheen.

On January 15, 19 Central Security Forces personnel were killed and several injured in a train derailment in Badrasheen. Many angry Egyptians protested to demand radical modifications to the railway system in Egypt.

Earlier this year, Mostafa was jailed for slapping a prosecutor after filing a complaint about the police torture of peaceful protesters in fierce clashes that took place in Alexandria in January.

On June 9, former Prosecutor General Abdel Meguid Mahmoud decided to conclude his career as Egypt’s prosecutor general by releasing Mostafa, who was serving one year in prison for attacking and insulting the prosecutor.

Mostafa was also detained twice during former President Hosni Mubarak's rule.
