9 killed in overnight violence across Egypt
Egypt witnessed a night of violence between Monday and Tuesday as deposed President Mohamed Morsi’s supporters continue to exert pressure.
Health officials told the privately-owned Al-Masry Al-Youm that nine were killed in clashes between Morsi supporters and their opponents in Cairo, Giza and Qalyubiya. Dozens were injured in the clashes.
In Giza, clashes erupted around the Nahda sit-in near Cairo University on Monday night, where Muslim Brotherhood supporters have been camping since the ouster of Morsi by the military on July 3. Protesters have been demanding the reinstatement of the deposed president.
A march coming out of the sit-in ended in clashes with residents around the area, and Molotov cocktails and firearms were being used. The state-run Middle East News Agency reported the death of six people in these clashes. The Muslim Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice portal reported that one of the deceased is a 13-year-old girl and that some of the shooting came from within Cairo University.
The following morning, Tuesday, a Brotherhood march took place in Giza, as protesters blocked a main road leading to Cairo University and attacked a traffic police station, the state-run Al-Ahram newspaper reported.
The violence was also raging outside of Cairo and Giza.
In Banha, Qalyubiya, local media reported that unknown assailants attacked the headquarters of the Muslim Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party on Monday, throwing Molotov cocktails at the building.
The incident happened hours after Brotherhood supporters blocked the Cairo-Alexandria road and clashed with residents of a village near Banha.
On Monday, violence spread in the center of Cairo when a Brotherhood protest approached Tahrir Square and ended in clashes with the police and other opponents. At least one person died.
The state-run Al-Ahram portal reported that the prosecution went to hospitals near Tahrir Square where most of the injured from Monday’s clashes have been getting treatment, to investigate how the violence escalated.
Violence had erupted on Sunday night in Suez when supporters of the deposed president clashed with anti-Morsi demonstrators, with dozens injured.
