6 sentenced to death over 2013 torching of Ghad al-Thawra Party headquarters
Six men, all tried in absentia by Cairo Criminal Court, were handed death sentences for their role in a February 2013 attack on the Ghad al-Thawra (Revolution's Tomorrow Party) headquarters in Downtown Cairo.
The defendants were accused of attempted murder, use of force, endangering public safety and illegal possession of weapons, the state-owned Al-Ahram newspaper reported.
The Ghad al-Thawra Party, founded by Ayman Nour in 2011, was raided by masked men on February 22, 2013. Two party members reported being briefly held hostage by assailants carrying bladed weapons and firearms. After releasing the captives, the assailants set the building on fire. No injuries were reported.
Defendants who are tried in absentia are generally handed the harshest possible sentences, and have the opportunity to appeal if they turn themselves in.
In May, a Cairo court sentenced 100 people to death in two separate cases on charges of espionage and breaking out of Wadi al-Natrun prison in 2011.
