49 dead and over 1000 detained in Saturday clashes

According to the latest death toll announced by the Ministry of Health early Sunday, 49 people were killed during clashes that occurred on Saturday during the commemoration of the third anniversary of the January 25 revolution.

The Ministry announced that the deaths occurred in Giza, Cairo, Alexandria, and Minya, and that 247 were injured in these governorates, as well as in Assiut, Beni Sueif, Fayoum and Ismailia.

However, the Front to Defend Egypt Protesters published a list with the names of 54 people who died in the clashes. The front also published the locations where each casualty occurred.

According to the list, 49 out of the 54 deaths occurred in intense clashes that took place in Alf Maskan area, with the cause of most deaths is listed as live ammunition. One victim of the Alf Maskan clashes, Mohamed Abdu, was shot in the head by a sniper from a helicopter, the front details in the list.

Human rights lawyers announced on Sunday morning that investigations began with those detained by security forces on Saturday. According to lawyers, some of those detained are being interrogated in the police stations where they were detained overnight, while others were referred to prosecution offices.

The Ministry of Interior announced on Saturday that it arrested 1079 people on Saturday.

The front announced on Sunday morning that the prosecution headed to the Maadi police station to interrogate 20 protesters who were arrested during a march in the area on Saturday, and are still being held there. Among the Maadi detainees is prominent liberal activist Nazly Hussein, who has been heavily involved in efforts to help political detainees since 2011.

Lawyer Ahmed Ezzat wrote on his Facebook page on Saturday that policemen threatened to shoot his colleagues Amr Imam and Mahmoud Bilal when they attempted to enter the Maadi police station where the protesters are detained.

Those detained are being accused of belonging to a terrorist group and disrupting general peace, among other charges.

Lawyers in the Association for Freedom of Thought and Expression reported that the prosecution investigated 60 detainees in the Dokki police station Saturday night in the absence of their lawyers, and have decided to detain them for 15 days while they continue investigations.

There are different groups of detainees in police stations in Ain Shams, Nasr City, Downtown and Dokki.

Lawyers are reporting difficulties in locating detainees, maintaining that the location where some groups will be interrogated have not been announced yet.
