40 students arrested in Azhar University protest
Forty Al-Azhar University students involved in Sunday's protests calling for former President Mohamed Morsi’s return have been arrested, and the prosecution began investigations into their case today, reported the state-run Middle East News Agency.
The students face charges of assaulting security forces, blocking the road, illegal assembly and vandalism.
Al-Azhar University released a statement on Monday denying allegations that security forces stormed the campus on Sunday to attack the protesting students, MENA said.
Ibrahim Hodhod, vice president of Al-Azhar University, said in the statement that some of the students were not peaceful, and threw rocks through windows and damaged some cars and the university gates.
Hodhod added that the students wrote what he called “obscene” statements on the walls insulting the military, police and religious leaders.
There were no injuries in the clashes, and classes were not interrupted because of the events, Hodhod added.
His statements corroborated the Ministry of Interior’s version of events. The ministry also denied that security forces stormed the university.
Ministry of Interior spokesperson Hany Abdel Latif accused the students of deliberately attempting to create a crisis by provoking the clashes. He accused them of blocking traffic on Nasr Road, throwing rocks at police forces and setting a trash receptacle on fire.
