Tips from the culture desk: It’s (almost) all about post-iftar music
It’s a bit of a slow week as people and spaces ease into the Ramadan schedule, and we’re mostly recommending musical performances in Cairo, but if you’re in Ramadan hibernation mode, stay in to watch some mosalsalat using our handy guide to help you navigate this year’s TV dramas.
My Favorite Things 2 - starts Sunday
Visual arts activities have not completely dried up in Cairo. The second edition of Mashrabia’s My Favorite Things exhibition, which brings together works by up-and-coming female artists, features Marwa El Shazly, Fadwa Ramadan, Azza Mostafa and Soad Abdelrasoul.

Dokkan and Nasser al-Mezdawi concert at Hayy Festival - Sunday
This Ramadan sees the long-awaited return of Geneina Theater’s Hayy Festival, which used to focus on female voices from the region and has now expanded to alternative music in general. The band Dokkan, which includes musicians Tarek al-Azhary, Omar Magdy, Naeyr Osama and Mohamed al-Mallawany, perform their contemporary interpretations of traditional Egyptian sound followed by Libyan musician Nasser al-Mezdawi's mix of Berber, Arab, African and other influences.

Emdan Al Noor (Gazaga) and Tanboura - Thursday
Having hosted the Cairo Jazz Club’s Mawaweel for several years, Darb 1718 now has its own festival instead. Layalina will consist of concerts and an artisans’ bazaar every Thursday throughout Ramadan. This coming weekend independent music troupe Emdan Al Noor and the Portsaid folk troupe El Tanboura perform.

Dina El Wedidi - Thursday
Dina El Wedidi performs her trademark modern Egyptian folk in this concert at the Cairo Opera House. The 29-year-old has two albums under her belt, has taken part in various editions of the Nile Project with other musicians from the Nile Basin region, and was mentored for a year with Brazilian legend Gilberto Gil, whom she performed with in Cairo in 2013.
